A family of adorable pink pigs is making themselves right at home in Texas, and they can't wait for you to come over and jump up and down in muddy puddles with them.

On Saturday, Merlin Entertainments opened the country's second Peppa Pig Theme Park in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, following the success of the first location in Winter Haven, Florida.

The new Peppa Pig Theme Park is in North Richland Hills, a northeastern suburb of Fort Worth. It's next door to the 17-acre NRH2O Family Water Park and less than 30 minutes from the Legoland Discovery Center and the Sea Life Grapevine aquarium.

"Merlin Entertainments' opportunity to bring an iconic children's television character to life in a theme park is truly special. We're not only responsible for building this beautiful park, but also for preserving the magic of Peppa Pig in this immersive experience for little ones. We are hoping families will create memories of a lifetime here," chief executive officer of Merlin Entertainments Fiona Eastwood said at the grand opening event on Feb. 28.

Tickets to Peppa Pig Theme Park start at $27.99 per person and include one free digital photo download and one free digital video download. There are also packages that include Peppa Pig ears and other collectible items, and annual passes are available for $99 per person. Children under 2 years of age do not require a ticket to visit the park.

Because the park is near other Melin-owned attractions, combo tickets that include admission to Peppa Pig World of Play Dallas, Legoland Discovery Center and the Sea Life Grapevine aquarium are also available.

Peppa Pig Theme Park's Texas location has five rides, a water play area and loads of activities designed just for kids. Daddy Pig's Roller Coaster is a perfect first roller coaster for little ones but may even make parents let out a squeal or two. The other rides include Peppa Pig's Balloon Ride, Grandad Dog's Pirate Boat Ride, Grampy Rabbit's Dinosaur Adventure and Mr. Bull's High Striker.

In between rides, kids can visit play spaces across the park, such as the Muddy Puddles Splash Pad (bring a swimsuit and a towel to dry off after), a bicycle and tricycle trail, a playground, and a Fun Fair with free carnival games and character meet-and-greets. Dining is available at Miss Rabbit's Diner, with kid-friendly menu items like pizza, sandwiches and "muddy puddle milkshakes."

Like other Merlin-owned attractions, the new Peppa Pig Theme Park emphasizes accessibility. Many rides and points of interest have been designed with wheelchair users in mind; the park also has accreditation through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards as a Certified Autism Center, meaning staff members have sensory awareness training, and each attraction has a sensory guide for parents.

What sets Peppa Pig Theme Park apart from other parks is that it is specifically geared toward younger kids. Children won't have to be stuck in the stroller shuffling from ride to ride all day long. Peppa Pig Theme Park is small enough and laid out so that kids can run around and explore (while their parents attempt to keep up with them).

Its smaller size also means you can experience the entire park in one day, making Peppa Pig Theme Park the latest in a trend toward smaller and more affordable "micro parks," such as the Universal Kids Resort theme park also under development in Texas.

A Peppa Pig Theme Park delights kids, puts North Richland Hills ‘on the map’

On a recent weekday, a small child frolicked under a spotless North Texas sky and a bright sun, shouting at his father as he made a beeline for playscape called “Granny Pig’s Garden.” A life-sized pig welcomed him in a British accent, while the child rolled around in turf made to look like rabbit burrows.

The whole scene played out at the brand new Peppa Pig Theme Park, which aims to bring young kids and their families in North Richland Hills.

Operated by Merlin Entertainments, the facility opens to the public Saturday with day passes starting at $27.99 a person. It has been in development for two years, but a planned 2024 opening was delayed after a rainy season impacted construction.

Now that its live, “...just to see the guests, all the smiling faces coming in, I get super, super emotional,” said Jeremy Aguilen, the park’s general manager.

Merlin Entertainments operates other attractions in the area, including the Legoland Discovery Center and Sea Life Aquarium in Grapevine, plus the Peppa Pig World of Play in the Grapevine Mills shopping mall.

After the success of Peppa Pig World of Play, building a theme park around the long-running cartoon in the Dallas-Fort Worth area made sense, Aguilen said.

‘Accessible to everyone’

Like the British cartoon on which it’s based, the park is geared toward preschool-age kids. Counting and reading exercises line the waiting areas for rides, and nothing is too big or scary for young ones.

“Families, that’s what we’re here for,” Aguilen said. “To create memories for all our families that bring their children. And we just want to be accessible to everyone.”

The park is also a Certified Autism Center by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards. This means that each ride has informational signs, and there’s a quiet room with tools available to children with autism and their parents. Also, the park publishes accessibility and sensory guides to help families navigate the park comfortably.

The most invigorating ride at the park, Daddy Pig’s Roller Coaster, has enough speed to excite children — and keep their parents entertained — but not so much as to be frightening.

The minimum ride height is 36 inches, and kids taller than 42 inches can ride alone, an important note as the ride may be too tight a squeeze for some parents; even this 5-foot-1 reporter felt quite cramped.

Each attraction in the park offers something different, from the soaring Peppa Pig’s Balloon Ride ― a cross between a merry-go-round and a Ferris wheel ― to Grampy Rabbit’s Dinosaur Adventure, a prehistoric departure from a 14-acre sea of mostly farm animals.

Aside from rides, there is a splash pad, a pillow-filled arena for live shows, a tricycle track and myriad play areas.

Wednesday morning, Peppa Pig and her brother George came out for a meet-and-greet at the arena. Four-year-old Blair Frohman was a bit nervous to meet Peppa after watching her show and reading her books. But the child was soothed after Peppa, George and the park staff sang happy birthday to her 1-year-old brother, Dawson.

“It’s kind of like a Six Flags for little kids. And I really think that it’s a big attraction for North Richland Hills that’s going to draw in people with families and younger kids,” said Blair’s mom, Alison Frohman, a resident of North Richland Hills.

North Richland Hills on the radar

Mayor Jack McCarty said the park may helps North Richland Hills serve a demographic that has been underserved: families with really young children.

McCarty spoke about his grandsons, ages 5 and 3, and the difficulty of finding age-appropriate places to take them.

North Richland Hills, though, is looking to fill that gap with a variety of attractions, such as an adventure park and Peppa Pig’s neighbor, the long-standing NRH2O water park. The city is in talks to pursue a “dual-ticketing relationship” between the two locales, McCarty said.

For its part, NRH2O receives around 250,000 guests in the 4 ½ months a year it’s open, according to McCarty; he estimated Peppa’s arrival could attract more than triple that.

“The bigger parks are really targeting the older ages, not the littles I have,” McCarty said. “I love that [Peppa Pig Theme Park] is marketing the Dallas-Fort Worth area, too, because it’ll pull a lot of visitors here.”

The goal, ultimately, is to attract young families to the community. According to economic development director Craig Hulse, the addition of young families to a city feeds schools, restaurants, youth sports leagues and other avenues that facilitate a city’s growth.

The new attraction “just puts us on the map,” Hulse said. “There’s over 100 cities in D-FW, and people knew us before as NRH2O, not just NRH. But now with Peppa Pig here, I think it’s going to add another focus on our community and what we have to offer, especially for young families.”

Brittany Williams, senior public relations manager for Merlin Entertainments, said this will be the third Peppa Pig Theme Park in the world. The others are located in Winter Haven, Florida, and Günzburg, Germany.

The North Richland Hills location is 1.6 miles from the Colleyville city limits and is the second Peppa Pig-related attraction in Tarrant County. Peppa Pig World of Play opened in Grapevine Mills in 2019. Williams said the new theme park offers an annual pass for that is good for both Peppa Pig locations in Grapevine and North Richland Hills for $99.

There are various ticket packages online with Merlin Entertainment with Peppa Pig Theme Park and three attractions in Grapevine Mills—Peppa Pig World of Play, Sea Life and the Legoland Discovery Center.

Williams added the Grapevine location is a two or three-hour "appetizer" for the new location that could be a day-long venture.

The details

The former Mountasia Family Fun Center sits on a 14-acre lot at 8851 SH 26 and is located next to the NRH2O Family Water Park, according to the North Richland Hill city website.

The first three rides at the theme park were installed in May 2024, according to previous reporting.

The park will feature five rides in total when it opens, according to the park website. Several play areas are also in the park, including a splash pad, treehouse playground and an indoor tricycle trail.
