North Richland Hills is a good Philly cheesesteak town.

Not as good as Philly itself, of course. But the suburbs northeast of Fort Worth have been the home of top-quality cheesesteaks, from now-gone Billadelphia’s to the Burger & Philly Shack and nearby Philly Dave’s.

The newest is Big Daddy Cheesesteaks, a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant at 6600 Davis Blvd., loaded with cheesesteak tradition and Cheez Whiz.

Owner Darrell Wilkerson went to Philadelphia and worked in both the city’s legendary cheesesteak hangouts, Jim’s Steaks and Pat’s King of Steaks, to learn the secrets behind the genuine Philly.

Mainly, he learned (1) to start with fresh beef finely chopped in-house and (2) to order the real-deal Amoroso’s bread rolls.

“We’re all scratch — we do it all here,” he said. Even the french fries are house-cut russet potatoes, double-fried in beef tallow.

“The exception is the Amoroso bread. I can bake bread. But I can’t do it as well as Amoroso.”

Even the fried pickles are house-made.

The classic cheesesteak starts with either beef or today, chicken — Big Daddy uses only a marinated breast filet — sliced, grilled with onions and topped with a choice of Cheez Whiz Philly-style, provolone or American.

The result is a tightly packed sandwich with meat, onions and Cheez Whiz dripping out of the bread.

I probably used 20 napkins. You may need more.

A cheesesteak with fries costs less than $13, or a chicken cheesesteak with fries is less than $11.

Common added toppings include mushrooms and bell peppers. Cherry peppers or banana peppers are also choices.

A side of excellent diner fries is less than $2, or less than $5 for cheesesteak fries topped with steak, grilled onions and cheese.

There’s also a smash-sauce-like table sauce.

The interior is spartan. The location is a 65-year-old former gas station-convenience store near the historic “Old Town Smithfield” part of North Richland Hills.

Big Daddy also sells fresh-ground burgers and Italian sausage sandwiches.

But most of the raves on social media are all about the Phillys.

A drone show company plans to earn a Guinness World Records title during a Fourth of July-themed show in Irving, Texas on Thursday.

Sky Elements will attempt to set the world record for the largest aerial image of a cowboy hat formed by multirotors or drones during Irving’s Sparks and Stripes event celebrating the Fourth of July, according to a news release and the company's website.

The Irving show will have 525 drones, said Preston Ward, Sky Elements’s chief pilot and general counsel. Some of the drones will have pyrotechnics on them, meaning that fireworks will be part of the show, Ward said. It will start at 9:45 p.m. and take place at Levy Event Plaza at 501 E. Las Colinas Boulevard.

The drone show company will also try to set the world record for the most live drone shows performed by different pilots in 24 hours on Friday, according to the release.

Sky Elements will put on 26 shows across the country on the evening of the Fourth of July, including one in Odessa, according to the release and the company's website. Each of the 26 shows will have 100 to 500 drones, Ward said.

"This is probably our most ambitious record we've ever attempted just because there's so many moving pieces," Ward said.

The company has earned 13 Guinness World Records titles, according to the release. In 2023, the company set the record for the largest aerial sentence formed by multirotors or drones during a Fourth of July show in North Richland Hills, Texas, using nearly 800 drones to form the message "Happy 4th of July 2023," according to the Guinness World Records website.

"It seems like it's impossible to do 26 all over the country all in one day, but we make it happen," Ward said. "And it's going to be my favorite record yet, because it takes the entire team."

Malibu Jack’s features an indoor rollercoaster and several other attractions.

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas — Everything’s bigger in Texas, but anyone who heads to North Richland Hills may discover that nothing is bigger in Texas either.

“Malibu Jack’s is Texas’ largest indoor theme park,” said David Scott, sales director at Malibu Jack’s in North Richland Hills.

Scott said Malibu Jack’s, which opened last week, is 137 thousand square feet of fun. The new entertainment concept is filled with go-karts, duckpin bowling, laser tag, two miniature golf courses and even a rollercoaster.

“There is a rollercoaster inside,” Scott confirmed.

There are a handful of other thrill rides, too. Plus, an arcade, which features more than 120 games, lights up the room.

For younger kids, Malibu Jack’s features a large play area.

“The kids' faces light up,” Scott said. “The parents' faces light up when they see our self-pour beer wall.”

A place that allows guests to feel like kids has not forgotten the adults.

Tucked in the middle of a large dining and seating area is the Surf Yourself beer wall. Guests can tap a card to select their favorite drink. It charges by the ounce, so guests can try as little or as much of a drink as they’d like.

“Literally something for everyone,” Scott said. “It’s just nonstop fun from start to finish.”

The best part, Scott said, is that the fun never ends.

“Rain or shine, no matter the Texas weather, it’s fun all the time,” he said.

Summer, spring, winter, or fall, it’s the hottest place around.
