The city of Lewisville is turning 100 years old in January and city officials are planning a year-long celebration filled with activities and branding.

What’s happening?

Lewisville was formally incorporated Jan. 15, 1925, though the city’s history stretches back even further to the 1840s. Lewisville residents can learn more about the city’s history through a new centennial website that was launched near the end of November.

The website contains a digital gallery of historical photos, a historical timeline, an event calendar and more. The calendar tracks centennial celebration events planned through December 2025 and will be updated as more events are confirmed, according to a city news release.

Events already on the calendar include a citywide centennial celebration picnic in May, a public tree-planting event and historical exhibits.

During a Dec. 2 City Council work session, Community Relations and Tourism Director James Kunke said the goal was to drive engagement across the city in 2025. Every activity and project meets one or more of five major elements focused on story telling, story sharing, historical preservation, public events and visibility.

“The idea is we want to involve as many people as possible in this celebration in some way,” Kunke said. “We want to engage as many people as possible to make this a true communitywide celebration.”

Kunke and Library Director Caroline Booker delivered an update on the centennial celebration planning during the December work session. The activities and projects being planned in 2025 were determined by nine committees with participation from about 40 Lewisville residents, according to the staff presentation.

January 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the city of Lewisville’s incorporation in 1925. January 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the city of Lewisville’s incorporation in 1925. The Lewisville community has been around almost twice as long though, with roots dating back another eighty years. It all started back in the 1840’s, when Texas was still a Republic and there was a campaign to bring more people to the state to fill in the miles of unused but arable land. The Texas Emigration and Land Company led the campaign offering six hundred families land to settle across what would become Denton County. Each family received 640 acres of land, and single men received 320 acres.

According to Lewisville’s published timeline, the first settlers to the area were the families of John and Augustus King, who migrated to the area in 1844. John and James Holford also settled the area that same year, and the community came to be known as Holford Prairie. The named changed to Lewisville in 1853.

The first sixty years of Lewisville had its challenges, but the community saw slow and steady infrastructural additions that allowed the town to grow. With the arrival of the Dallas-Wichita Railroad in 1881, the settlement gained better access to supplies and was able to attract and grow to 500 people by 1900, and then to 850 by 1925 when it was incorporated.

One notable event that rocked Lewisville over Labor Day Weekend in 1969 was the Texas International Pop Festival, a music festival headlined by several household names in the music industry including Janis Joplin, Chicago, and Led Zeppelin. The Dallas International Motor Speedway and Lewisville Lake provided the perfect backdrop for attendees, and gave local residents plenty of opportunities for people-watching.

In the 1970s and 1980s, more businesses came to the area, including the Lewisville Medical Center and the Vista Ridge Mall. By the 1990’s, Lewisville’s population reached just under 47,000 people. This is a number that has nearly tripled in 2025.

Today, Lewisville is home to award winning parks, an excellent school district, and a wealth of local businesses and neighborhoods. It is ranked as one of the largest cities in Denton County, and is one of the Top 20 largest cities in Dallas-Fort Worth.

After closing for inclement weather Jan. 9, Coppell ISD and Lewisville ISD announced that all schools and buildings will remain closed Jan. 10 as a winter storm continues in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Jan. 9 through Jan. 10, expecting a wintry mix with snow and sleet accumulations between 1 and 4 inches and ice accumulations around a tenth of an inch.

What to know

According to a news release, Coppell ISD has made the decision to close all schools and administration buildings on Jan. 10. All extracurricular, athletic and fine arts activities are also canceled due to the weather. Each program will share specific information regarding events occurring over the weekend.

Since the district and schools are closed, parents and guardians do not have to submit a school absence note for Jan. 10, per the release.

LISD also decided to close all schools and facilities, but officials stated that decisions about extracurricular activities will be made at a later time by coaches or program directors, according to a news release. Parents can stay informed through the district's multiple platforms.

Before you go

Coppell ISD officials stated in the release that the district is assessing how this day will be made up, which could include the use of bad weather days or by using extra instructional minutes already built into the district’s calendar. Once finalized, this decision will be shared with staff and families.

LISD officials stated in the release that plans to make up the missed days will be announced at a later date.

Additionally, CISD report cards were originally scheduled to be released Jan. 10, but will now be released Jan. 13 instead.

Plans are underway to open a new car wash facility along West Round Grove Road in Lewisville.

During a Jan. 6 meeting, Lewisville City Council members approved a special use permit for a Quick Quack Car Wash location to open at a space formerly occupied by Kwik Kar. It’s the third Quick Quack location planned in Lewisville.

The franchise opened its first Lewisville location on Continental Drive in September. Plans are also underway to open a location at 780 Lakeside Circle. Quick Quack Car Wash specializes in exterior-only express car washes, according to its website. The franchise was founded in California in 2004 and now features more than 250 locations in five states.

The details

Quick Quack officials intend to remodel the existing car wash facility at 1111 West Round Grove Road. A special use permit is required because the location does not meet distance standards for adjacent automotive uses as dictated by the city’s unified development code.

The proposed location is surrounded by properties zoned for local commercial use, according to a staff memo. Adjacent properties include a McDonald’s to the east, a Driver’s Edge auto repair shop to the west and a day care facility to the north.
