11-6A girls basketball is the cream of the crop in North Texas, and possibly the state

As Cedar Hill girls basketball coach Nicole Collins watched her players pose for photos with the state semifinal trophy after beating Plano East on Tuesday, she touched on a key reason why her team is one win away from its first state title.

“We’re battle tested,” she said. “When you have to play a Duncanville, a DeSoto, a Lancaster ... it prepares you for the playoffs.”

That is the one upside of playing in District 11-6A, not only the toughest district in Texas, but perhaps the country. The stats that back that up across all sports are remarkable, but more on that later.

Teams currently in the “District of Doom” have won four of the last five 6A state titles in girls basketball — Duncanville in 2020 and 2024 and DeSoto in 2021 and 2022. Both of those schools finished in the top 25 in the MaxPreps national rankings in 2020, 2022 and 2024, and DeSoto was as high as No. 2 in 2022 and No. 10 in 2021 while Duncanville was No. 11 in 2020 and 2024.

Cedar Hill (29-8) can add to the district’s domination of Texas by beating Humble Summer Creek (29-11) in Saturday’s 7 p.m. Class 6A Division I state championship game at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

“Even the teams that didn’t make [the playoffs] have good coaches, good kids,” Collins said. “Waxahachie, Skyline, you’re getting tested every night. There are a lot of districts that don’t get that, and it clearly is paying off.”

This year in the UIL’s new split-division playoff format, 11-6A was the only district in the state that had two state semifinalists in 6A, 5A, 4A or 3A, and neither school won the 11-6A title. Class 6A Division II state semifinalist Lancaster finished second and Cedar Hill was third in a district that was won by 12-time state champion Duncanville.

All three of those teams were in the top 10 in the final 6A state rankings. But No. 10 Cedar Hill is the only team still playing after beating No. 5 and defending state champion Duncanville 57-47 in the 6A Division I Region II final — avenging two district losses to Duncanville.

“Our district is probably the hardest in Texas,” Cedar Hill senior forward Rylan Jones said as she took a quick break from celebrating with fans after she scored 23 points in Tuesday’s 61-51 win over Plano East. “We had some losses that we shouldn’t have had, and all playoffs we knew that.”

Lancaster moved up from 5A to 6A in the UIL’s realignment in February and was placed in 11-6A, but new girls basketball coach LaJeanna Howard still took a team that was coming off a 20-15 season and led it to the first state semifinal appearance in school history. Howard was well prepared for the rigors of coaching in 11-6A and facing the abundance of talent in the area south of Dallas, having won state titles at Duncanville as a head coach (2020), assistant coach (2016) and player (2003).

The eight teams currently in 11-6A have combined to win 15 state titles and make 41 trips to the state semifinals in girls basketball alone. When you add in boys basketball, football, volleyball, baseball, softball, boys and girls soccer and boys and girls track, those eight schools have combined for 94 state titles in their history.

They’ve made 115 trips to the state semifinals (not counting football) and 18 state championship game appearances (football only).

Before Duncanville played DeSoto in football this season in a matchup of nationally ranked teams and back-to-back state champions, DeSoto star defensive lineman Keylan Abrams and DeSoto four-star running back Deondrae “Tiger” Riden Jr. compared it to two of the greatest rivalries in all of sports.

“I kind of compare it to the Georgia vs. Alabama game. I think it’s as big as that game,” said Abrams, a TCU signee.

“I would say Michigan and Ohio State,” said Riden, a Texas A&M signee.

It’s hard to argue with either of them when Duncanville and DeSoto have combined to send 32 players to the NFL and have had 73 area top-100 recruits in football in the Class of 2018 through 2025. Add in Cedar Hill, Lancaster, Skyline, Waxahachie, Mesquite and Mesquite Horn and the current 11-6A has produced 68 NFL players.

The schools in 11-6A have combined to win 13 state titles in boys basketball and 11 in football, but girls track is actually their best sport. They have won a combined 34 team state championships, and that includes a UIL-record 14 by Lancaster, nine apiece by DeSoto and Skyline (tied for second-most in state history) and 2023 and 2024 titles by Duncanville.

Duncanville and DeSoto swept the 6A state titles in football in 2022 and 2023, and if there had been a split-division playoff format like that in girls basketball before this year, the district might have produced two state champions on multiple occasions. Duncanville and DeSoto played each other in regional finals in 2021, 2022 and 2024, with the winner going on to win a state title each time, and Duncanville beat Cedar Hill in a regional final in 2020 before winning state.

“I love our district,” DeSoto football coach Claude Mathis said in October. “I think we have one of the hardest districts that is out there in the state. Whoever comes out of our district has a good chance to win state.”

Kim Mulkey, the LSU women’s basketball coach and four-time national champion, has built a reputation for her fiery demeanor both on the court. Few understand this better than Cedar Hill’s Nicole Collins, a former point guard who played under Mulkey at Baylor.

“That spitfire people see on the sideline? That’s her 24/7,” Collins said. “I’ve had people ask me, ‘Is that for show? Is she like that just for TV?’ No, that’s who Coach Mulkey is. That’s how she coaches in practice. That’s how she is as a person.”

Mulkey’s intensity is matched only by her flamboyant style. Known for her bold fashion choices, she has long embraced the idea that femininity and toughness can coexist.

“She’s the one who said it was OK to dress up and look feminine and be tough as hell on the basketball court. Mom, I thank you for that,” Mulkey said in her Hall of Fame speech.

Now the head coach of Cedar Hill’s girls basketball team, Collins brings the same ethos to her program as they prepare for a pivotal game. Cedar Hill will face Duncanville on Friday in the Class 6A Division 1 regional final.

At games, she often strides down the sideline in heels with her hair, nails, and makeup meticulously done.

Collins, who has always valued self-expression, didn’t get her style from her former coach, but she taught her players, like Mulkey, that it is possible to balance being feminine while being an athlete.

“Sometimes we teach girls that play basketball to be aggressive, to be assertive, to be grimmy, to be gritty, but you can still be a lady when you do that,” Collins said.

Collins’ style also reflects her cultural roots. Many of the garments and accessories she wears are staples in Black culture. At a school where over 70% of the student body is Black, she strives to be a positive role model for her players.

“I do think that there is a big shift that has happened where we’re starting to appreciate more of our blackness and be proud of that,” Collins said. “To put that out there, and I think that’s part of being a proud Black woman.”

Since Collins stopped playing basketball in the early 2000s, she has witnessed a shift in how women athletes express themselves.

Collins celebrates the growing visibility of feminine athletes in the WNBA, like Angel Reese and Rickea Jackson. She’s happy the next generation of female hoopers can be themselves.

“I love seeing feminine girls playing basketball and being some of the best players,” Collins said. “Being feminine doesn’t mean you have to wear makeup or have your nails done, but it’s about being proud of being a woman, proud of your femininity. For so long, you didn’t see that, but now you are, and it’s starting to be accepted more.”

CEDAR HILL, Texas — Viral food critic and social media influencer Keith Lee dropped another review of a North Texas food spot Thursday night.

Since he confirmed recently that he's moved to Dallas, these North Texas reviews will probably become more and more common. He previously lived in Las Vegas for 10 years.

Lee is known for posting reviews of small businesses and other restaurants and is known for occasionally sowing controversy and boosting business at local restaurants.

Lee tried four items: "soul rolls," wings with sweet potato cornbread and "soul sauce" (on the side), tender short ribs over seasoned rice and collard greens, and fried pound cake. Lee gave the soul rolls a 8/10 and said a mayo-based sauce would give it a higher score. Lee gave the wings 8/10, also. The short ribs got a 7.5/10. Finally, the fried pound cake, which Lee said he'd never had anywhere else before, got didn't get a score because he was unsure how it was fried. He said it tasted like regular pound cake.

At the end of the video, Lee said the new restaurant "has a lot of potential" and seemed to be getting good business. He said he can see Soul Shack being an amazing place and was happy they went to try it.

Soul Shack is open Sunday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 p.m. to midnight, according to their website. The restaurant is closed on Fridays, the website says. For more information, click here.
