Robotic Hair Transplants

You never thought that a robot would be doing any type of surgery. Well the time is here! So maybe the robot doesn’t do it all on his own, Dr. Mark Bishara maneuvers the Artas Robot to help get you the best quality follicular units. The Artas Robot is fairly new it was introduced to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons in 2008 and in 2011 it was cleared by the FDA! It is safe and reliable.

How it works!

Your probably wondering how a hair transplant is performed as it sounds like a lot of work. Well its not, Hair transplantation has gotten easier and faster with the help of the artas robot. On the day of your procedure you have an option of shaving your head or only the donor area from where the hair will be taken from (for men) women we will only shave the donor area leaving the rest of the hair to cover. Local anesthesia is used to minimize pain and discomfort along with valium to help relax. Once ready Dr. Mark Bishara will set the robot to begin the dissection part of the hair transplant procedure. The robot will begin dissecting as one of Dr. Bishara’s techs extracts the follicular units. Once completely extracted the follicular units are checked for quality and Dr. Mark Bishara begins making sites where there new hair will be planted. Dr. Bishara’s techs will then begin the planting process. After completing the planting of the follicular units post-op instructions will be reviewed to help you understand how to care for your new hair. Written instructions along with all of the supplies needed to care for your new hair will be provided. So you see its not as complicated as you thought it would the hardest part is always coming in for the initial consultation. After that everything is just a sit back and getting it done!

Beard Craze!

Facial hair transplantation has become quite popular here at The Paragon Plastic Surgery and Med Spa. Beard transplantations to be exact. As not all men are blessed with having a full beard. Some have patchy beards some have non at all. Well with this full beard craze happening Dr. Mark Bishara has the solution for you!

The Works!

So now you wonder how? Well as you might have heard of hair transplants, beard transplants work the same only difference is that its going on your face. When performing beard transplantation Dr. Mark Bishara uses the same technique as with hair. Beard transplants typically take around 300 to 800 follicular units. Dr. Mark Bishara uses the ARTAS robotic system to take the hair from the donor area. Before starting the ARTAS robot Dr. Bishara will assist you in drawing in the beard design you like. The Paragon Plastic Surgery techs will shave the back of the head which is where the hair being transplanted is typically taken from. The ARTAS robot will then be started, you will sit in prone position  as the robot does the dissecting part. Don’t worry, we use local anesthetic to minimize pain and discomfort. As the robot is dissecting one of Dr. Mark Bishara’s techs will begin to check the follicular units for quality. Once the dissecting is done, you will be laid on your back and Dr. Mark BIshara will numb the beard and mustache area to begin making the recipient sites. Once Dr. Mark Bishara is done the techs will begin planting the follicular units that were extracted on to the new recipient area.

The waiting game

The procedure is done and you are now ready to go home and play the waiting game. As everything begins to heal small scabs around the recipient sites will begin to form and should only last about 4 to 5 days. Medications are prescribed to help with any pain/sleep as well as antibiotics to help prevent any infection. Two weeks after the beard transplant the hair transplanted will begin to fall out. Don’t panic that is absolutely normal! At around 3 months after the beard transplantation your new beard will begin to grow and last a lifetime!

Finding the Right Hair Dr!

Robotic devices are more commonly used for many different types of surgical procedures. One being Robotic Fue, which just happens to be one of Dr. Mark. A. Bishara’s top procedures at the Paragon Plastic Surgery and Med Spa. Dr. Mark. A. Bishara has done many robotic FUE’s. From Hair transplantations to beards and even eyebrows. As tedious as it sounds Dr. Mark A. Bishara and his staff at the Paragon Plastic Surgery and Med Spa are very professional and experienced.

The Invention

Restoration robotics is a medical device company who created  a robot called the ARTAS to help assist in hair transplantation. The Artas Robot consists of a chair in which the patient would sit through out the whole hair transplantation. Aside from the chair is the actual Artas Robot which Dr. Mark A. Bishara controls using a computer. The   Artas Robotic device has been FDA cleared.

What it does

The Artas Robot has a robotic arm which is being controlled to dissect hair follicles from the back and sides of the scalp. In order for the robotic arm to detect the patients hair, Dr. Mark A. Bishara staff shaves the back of the patients head. Unlike the traditional strip removal of the patients donor area the Artas Robot is designed to perform a follicular unit extraction using a special 0.7 to 1mm diameter tool. That only means one thing, no linear scar. The cuts using the Artas Robot will leave a scar that is barely visible to the naked eye.

Beard hair or facial hair is often time desired in people who lack the ability to grow facial hair.  This can be a for a several reasons.  Religious reasons, social status and self esteem all contribute to why men seek out a fuller-thicker beard!

Beard Shapes and Sizes

Beard Anatomy

7 Regions: Cheek Beard, Mustache, Forebeard, Side Beard, Jaw Beard, Under Beard and Neck Hair

Usually, when I am transplanting the beard, I will use advanced harvest techniques at 3000 RPM with a 19G punch using the FUE ARTAS robot and taking hair from back of the head.  If I am taking hair from under the angle of the mandible I like to use a 1.0MM or 0.9MM sharp punch.
Most patients will need around 32 weeks for the beard to become fully developed from the transplant procedure. It usually takes 2 beard transplants to get a desired result however we occasionally will perform up to 4 transplants to achieve the amount of thickening that patients will want.
Average Cost ranges from about $5000.  Average number of Hairs needed to transplant varies dramatically but it is very common to go over 4,000 total hairs over 2,200 to 2,500 grafts.

8 Frequently Asked Questions

Typical Men Having The Procedure Done

Typical patients include men who have struggled since adolescence to grow a beard, men with facial scarring, those filling in a few gaps or the ones interested in doing a complete beard construction. No matter the situation the look men are going for is definitely to have a bit of facial hair.

Pain Level

Like any scalp hair transplant, the procedure is practically painless. Most of the time, it is conducted using the FUE hair transplant technique. At The Paragon Plastic Surgery and Med Spa we are one of two in Texas that offer the ARTAS System. ARTAS is the first Hair Transplant Robot to improve the most challenging aspects of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). It offers numerous beneficial features, including an image-guided robotic arm, special imaging technologies, small dermal punches and a computer interface. The ARTAS System is capable of identifying and harvesting individual follicular units to implement the FUE technique.

Where The Donor Hair Comes From

The hair for beard transplants typically is taken from the back of the patients head and then planted through micro-incisions on the facial region desired. The hair from the back of the head most closely resembles the hair grown around the chin. In cases of those with a balding head, your surgeon may extract donor hair from body hair.

Procedure Duration

This transplant procedure takes about 2-7 hours to complete, depending on the area covered and the beard density you are looking for. Free images.com/Toni Mihailov.

Facial Hair After Procedure

Once transplanted, the beard hair takes root gradually. The transplanted hairs fall out after two weeks but the roots stay and begin to grow new hair within several months. Put your faith in science. Once it’s fully healed, the new facial hair can be treated just like real hair because that’s just what it is – real hair.

Shaving After Procedure

Do not shave the transplanted hair for the first couple weeks after the surgery. After this short phase, you can decide if you want more of a scuffy “just rolled out of bed look” or if you want to shave and have a silky smooth baby face. Free images.com/Paul Preacher.

Recovery Time

In most cases plan on having 2 to 3 days of social down time. So, pull out the video games, the Netflix binge schedule and last but not least the food and enjoy your down time while knowing soon enough you’ll have the facial hair you’ve always wanted.

Permanent Solution

A very important feature and benefit of any type of hair transplant is that it gives permanent results. You won’t have to worry about losing your new facial hair or having to be careful with your new hair after you’re totally healed from the transplant. Once the hair takes root it really is your very own facial hair!

Bring Pictures

Make it a fun experience! Patients are encouraged to bring in pictures of their favorite celebrities beard/facial hair that they are wanting to mirror. This gives the surgeon a great idea of what the patient envisions for himself.
