The goal of almost any elective plastic surgery procedure is to achieve a more youthful look. But just how many years can you actually drop? Nine. That’s according to a recent study in the Archives of Plastic Surgery. Of course it depends on which surgery you have done and how many treatments you choose to do too.
At the University of Toronto, 40 volunteer medical students studied the photographs of 60 plastic surgery patients aged 45 to 72. In their “before” photos, the volunteers guessed near the correct age, assuming the patients were about 1.7 years younger than their actually age. Then the volunteers studied photos of the patients after they received either facelifts and necklifts; facelifts, necklifts and eyelid surgery; or eyelid surgery plus lifts to the face, neck and forehead.
The first group (facelifts and necklifts) were guessed to be 5.7 years younger. The second group (facelifts, neck lifts, and eyelids) were perceived to be 7.5 years younger. And the last group that had the most surgeries (facelifts, necklifts, forehead lifts and eyelid surgery) were guessed to be 8.5 years younger than their true age.
Some people may not want to undergo a full facelift and if so, there are alternatives:

ISOLATED COSMETIC SURGERIES

For people with less facial aging, a neck liftforehead lift, mid-face lift, eyelid surgery, or chin surgery can minimize the effects of aging and offer a fresher, more youthful look.

WHAT ARE THE OTHER OPTIONS FOR A SAGGING FACE?

There are a number of surgical and non-surgical options that can improve one’s cosmetic appearance: fillerslaser skin-tightening procedureslasersfat contouringIPL Fotofacial and Botox. Each has benefits and drawbacks. Mini procedures do not produce the long lasting maximum improvement that is achieved with a natural appearing artistically performed lift performed by an expert experienced plastic surgeon. The best result is achieved by a combination of elevating the sagging tissues, removing the excess skin, contouring the fat, and adding micro-fat grafts or fillers where there is a deficiency.
Besides a facelift, Juvederm Voluma also helps volume loss in cheeks.  JuvedermTM VolumaTM is the latest of the Juvederm range of hyaluronic acid fillers specifically designed to restore volume in areas of volume loss. Common areas include the cheeks, cheekbones, and chin. Additionally, due to its versatility it is also suitable for adding definition to the jaw line.

Necklift [ Platysmaplasty ]

What Is A Necklift
Depending on your individual concerns, there are a different types of necklift procedures to choose from that can help improve the appearance of your neck:

It is common to combine a necklift procedure with other cosmetic surgery such as a facelift, chin lift or any procedure that improves the jawline, jowls and cheek area, which might involve liposuction.
During a necklift, one-inch incisions are strategically placed under the chin and/or behind the ears to tighten up neck muscles that have become loose over the years. Patients with greater laxity may require a longer incision behind the ears.
The procedure, usually performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation, first releases the muscle from the skin before the neck muscles are pulled tight. After the skin is tightened, excess skin is eliminated through additional incisions around the ear. This can provide a very dramatic improvement to the neck, and it’s frequently performed as part of a facelift.
A cheek lift and necklift—in which lax muscles are tightened and elevated to a more youthful position—combined with liposuction along the jawline can permanently restore definition to the lower face.
Excess neck skin removal (called cervicoplasty) is performed by making an incision under your chin and behind the ears. The surgeon will then cut back and lift the skin, which will be secured with permanent sutures or a special type of permanent adhesive glue.
Another necklift procedure, platysmaplasty, is performed to reduce the banded appearance of the neck. During the procedure, incisions will be made under the chin or behind the ears, or both. The surgeon will then insert a tiny instrument to either remove a portion of specific neck muscles or realign them, which will tighten the middle area of the neck. As with a cervicoplasty, your doctor will suture areas of the muscles in order to clasp them in the best position.

Know Your Goals
You must be in good health to get a neck lift. You’ll consult with your surgeon in advance. For that meeting, have your goals in mind for what you want to change.
Here are some of the most common concerns that are addressed with a neck lift:

  • Turkey wattle neck
  • Excess fat
  • Too much skin

Your Consultation
During your consultation, you should go over your goals and learn about the options:

  • Turkey Wattle: Your surgeon may recommend surgery, which involves making cuts under your chin or behind your ears or both to access a neck muscle called the platysma. Sometimes, that may even mean removing some muscle. Instead of surgery or in addition to it, Botox injections can relax parts of the platysma that are responsible for the “band” appearance or look of fullness.
  • Liposuction:  During liposuction, your surgeon will make a small cut below your chin and remove excess fat. If you are also getting other procedures, it is very common for cosmetic surgeons to begin with liposuction. You will be able to determine this with your doctor during your consultation.
  • Too Much Skin on Your Neck: Your surgeon will trim parts of the skin and lift it into place, securing it with tissue glue or stitches.

When it comes to tackling the signs of aging, you have to look at the problems that exist—loose skin, a loss of volume and textural changes. Fillers and injectables and surgery are not substitutes for one another. If the skin needs to be redraped, you need surgery. A filler can do a lot of things but it can’t ever get rid of loose skin. It’s important to be educated on the rejuvenating modalities available. Recovery, risks and expenses need to be considered. When comparing fillers, lasers and surgery, the price tag associated with each can be quite different, ranging froma few hundred to a few thousand dollars, if not more. Fillers and injectables are the most affordable option; lasers fall between fillers and surgery; surgery is the most expensive option.
Choose skin tightening treatments if you have minimal looseness in the neck area: Different from a true laser but often labeled as such, skin-tightening devices (relies on radio-frequency energy) to tighten loose skin by stimulating collagen at the dermal layer. They don’t resurface the texture of the skin but instead cause new collagen to be created by deeply heating the underlying layers of the skin with energy like ultrasound or radio frequency. The existing collagen is injured and reorganizes itself as part of the healing process. As it does this it tightens the skin to some degree.
What it can’t do: Correct textural issues; give the same end result as what can be accomplished with a facelift or necklift
What it can do: Create new collagen, which, in turn, lends a smoothing and tightening effect; can also be used to correct slight looseness in the cheeks and eyelids
Choose a necklift if you have moderate to extreme laxity and sagging in the neck area: A smooth, long neck is a quintessential characteristic of femininity. But with time, the neck loses its elastic support and the muscles become lax. If we are concerned as to how the neck line is defined, surgery may be the best option to correct it. During the procedure, neck muscles are tightened up and extra skin is trimmed away. If extra fat is also a problem, it can be removed.
What it can’t do: Improve skin quality
What it can do: Restore definition to the lower part of the face; reduce banding in the neck
Combination therapies, in which doctors use a mix-and-match approach to rejuvenation, are important. You almost always have to use lasers, skin care, neurotoxins, fillers and surgery together for the best results. For total rejuvenation it’s often recommended that several different procedures be done. While you can get good results with just surgery, a laser or fillers alone, using them in tandem may create better results. Surgery works to first rebuild the structure and foundation of the face so you know how much filler needs to be added to restore the lost volume. A good ongoing skin-care program is the true icing on the cake.

More and more Americans are opting to enhance their assets. According to a new report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 15.1 million cosmetic surgery procedures took place in the United States in 2013 – up 3 percent from the previous year.

While breast augmentations and nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) are still the most popular surgical procedures, butt augmentations are also on the rise.  Nearly 10,000 procedures took place in 2013, an increase of 16 percent from 2012.  The report also noted that neck lifts have become very popular, as it is one of the first areas of the body to show a person’s age.  More than 55,000 neck procedures were performed in 2013.
ASPS President Dr. Robert Murphy said advancements in technology have ultimately paved the way for growth of the plastic surgery industry.
“The demand for plastic surgery remains strong, with our statistics showing increases in both cosmetic surgical and minimally-invasive procedures,” Murphy said in a press release. “… With new devices and products hitting the market each year, there are more options and choices available to consumers wanting to refresh their look or a little nip and tuck.”
