Stress!

Physical trauma such as surgeries, illnesses, automobile accidents, pregnancy, and emotional stress can cause hair loss. Don’t worry, situations as such only cause hair loss temporarily. Having such physical trauma causes the your hair to go in a state of shock. As your body begins to heal and recover the hair lost will begin to grow back. Vitamin A and Protein

Sometimes we see as taking more than needed vitamin supplements is doing our body good. Vitamin A containing supplements can trigger hair loss. Keep in mind that the daily dose of Vitamin A is 5,000 IU for adults. Lack of protein in ones diet can also shut down hair growth. Usually hair loss begins 2 to 3 months after protein intake drops. Controlling intake amounts of vitamin A and making sure your getting protein in will solve the issue.

Male Pattern Baldness or Heredity?

Both! Male pattern baldness is caused by a mixture of genes and hormones. MPB (male pattern baldness) follows a pattern in which hair is lost at the temples. Hair loss in women is known as androgenic or androgenetic alopecia. Women don’t usually have a receding hairline like men do. Women will have noticeable hair loss or thinning at the part. Both women and men benefit from minoxidil or rogaine to help grow and maintain the existing hair. Hair transplantation and PRP treatments are also and option.

Hypothyroidism

Having an underactive thyroid gland can cause hair loss as well. Your thyroid gland produces hormones that interact with your metabolism and growth. When it is not producing enough hormones it affects your hair causing it to fall out. Taking synthetic thyroid medication and getting thyroid levels to normal should take care of the issue.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata is a result of an overactive immune system. As our immune system is going it targets our hair as a foreign object and attacks causing hair loss in round patches through out the scalp. Steroid injections and romaine are the go to’s when treating alopecia areata.

Hair Styling

Over styling our hair with tight braids, ponytails or using products such as hot oils or relaxers can hurt our hair. Doing these types of treatments or the way we style our hair can cause root damage causing your hair to be lost permanently. Limiting the amount of use of these products or hair styles will help us keep our hair longer. Avoid using heat products to once a week if possible.

What causes Traction Alopecia?

Traction alopecia is a pattern of baldness you may be experiencing due to traction or pulling of the hair. Common causes for traction alopecia are:

  • -Tight Pony tails
  • -Tight Braids
  • -Extensions
  • -Long term use of wigs
  • -Relaxers or hair dye
  • -Headgear(helmets when wearing to tight or daily use)

Keep in mind that if your hair is damaged, you may have some reversal after 6-8 months. If the follicle is dead, only option is to get help with hair restoration and Dr. Mark Bishara at The Paragon Plastic Surgery and Med Spa is just the right person to consult with.

Can i regain my old hair by long term use of minoxidil 5%?

Will minoxidil help grow new hair? The answer is No. The purpose of minoxidil is to help stop hair loss and reverse some miniaturization of the hair adding density to existing hair. The only way to adding new hair is via hair transplantation.

Will blood test rule out other hair loss causes, other than male pattern baldness?

Anyone can seek out blood test to learn the cause of their hair loss, but don’t be surprised if everything comes back normal. Hypothyroidism can be indicative of hair loss, most men suffer form androgenic alopecia where your testosterone converts to DHT via 5 alpha reductase.

Can any treatments halt or reverse loss at temples recovering from CTE/TE?

Most physicians believe that CTE or TE will resolve on its own, therefore a specific treatment is not recommended. However, treating the hair gently, shampooing daily with a gentle shampoo is a great start.  As hard as it sounds, try not to obsess about the loss, this just adds unneeded stress to an already stressful situation.

Im 5 weeks post op from my FUE transplant and my hair is falling!

As the body heals and the tiny scabs fall off the scalp, it is natural for the scabs surrounding the short hairs to fall out with it.  Typically 2 to 3 days post procedure, blood vessel grow into the bottom of the follicular unit that was just transplanted, essentially cementing them in.  Any hair lost after that time will be replaced with new hairs.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

As we may all know there are many ways to help with hair loss. Have you heard of PRP? or Platelet Rich Plasma? You may have heard of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) used to promote the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, joints and most musculoskeletal problems. Well now you can get a PRP treatment to help with hair loss and hair thinning! How cool is that! Whats more exciting is that you can get it done at Dr. Mark A. Bishara’s office, The Paragon Plastic Surgery and Med Spa.

What exactly is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

So what exactly is PRP? PRP is a very natural, non surgical alternative for the treatment of hair loss or hair thinning. PRP is an injectable treatment which uses the patients own blood. Our own blood (PRP) contains active growth factors which can promote hair growth. PRP can be used as a treatment itself or it can be injected during a hair transplant/restoration surgery. PRP needs to be done 2-3 times a year to maintain any benefit, it is well worth it. Because who wouldn’t want their hair looking fuller and healthier? Dr. Mark A. Bishara and  the staff at The Paragon Plastic Surgery and Med Spa highly recommend it!

Body Hair Transplantation is essentially taking hair from other areas of the body rather than the most common, the back or sides of the head, and then planting those hairs to the balding area. The other donor areas that hair follicles can be taken from includes: beard, chest, shoulders, stomach, arms and legs. Below are 6 Frequently asked questions concerning Body Hair Transplantation.

Typical Candidate

In cases where the head hair has depleted or the type of hair needed to transplant is different than the type of hair on the head.

Color

If someone wants a beard transplantation from their blonde head hair to their patchy red beard, the blonde hair color is not going to change to red once the hairs are transplanted to the beard. However, the mixing of these colors and those alike could potentially create a strawberry blonde look. If mixing different colors of hair is the only option available, the patient has the option to dye the hair all over once it’s completely healed because it is normal hair by then and can be treated that way.

Length

Hair length will grow as it did in the donor site. So if you’re using hair from other parts of the body besides the head you are committing to having shorter hair. Beard and hair from the head are hairs that for most never stop growing at a certain length or amount of time. Hair on the chest, legs and arms essentially stop growing at a certain length usually around 3 to 6 cm.

Texture

Hair texture will keep the same texture as it had before it was transplanted to another area. For instance if one was wanting eyebrow restoration, the typical donor site would be arm or leg hair. Arm or leg hair would be used in eyebrow transplantation because this hair is finer and the growth isn’t going to be long.

Structure

Body hair can change its structure. In some cases the hairs would become longer and straighter which is adapting to normal hair on the head. In others, the hairs wouldn’t change from their original structure.

Scaring

FUE otherwise known as Follicular Unit Extraction using ARTAS is a procedure that extracts the hair follicles with one-millimeter punches. The tiny size of each extraction makes scaring almost out of the question, in most cases leaving only little white dots if anything at all.

Surrounding Areas

Dr. Mak A Bishara, M.D. P.A. performs robotic follicular unit graft selection for residents living around Mansfield, Southlake, Dallas, Arlington, Fort Worth, and surrounding the DFW area in North Texas.

Importance of Robotic Follicular Unit Graft Selection

Robotic follicular unit graft selection is important during hair restoration surgery because the surgeon can select 2 hair, 3 hair or 4 hair follicular unit grafts and avoid taking single hair grafts when they’re not needed. This supplies more total hair transplanted during the transplant procedure than a typical nonselective process will provide.

How does this work?

The robot sees different hairs that are grouped together with two or more hairs.   Using the optical guidance system with two separate cameras you can distinguish these from single hair grafts.  Dr. Mark A. Bishara, M.D. P.A. programs the robot to only select out thick, more robust follicular units which provides the patient with more hair and a thicker result with minimal soft tissue wounding in the donor area.  This advancement is by far the most significant benefit towards the economy of motion during the procedure.
