Some people are going to ‘unusual’ lengths to stop summer sweating. They’re putting needles full of toxins straight into their armpits.
Jim Lawson is a guy who sweats a lot in the summer. It doesn’t bother him when he’s out on his bike–he’s an avid rider–but when he’s at work giving a presentation or trying to lure new clients, it’s a different story.
“I get pretty nervous when I’m in a meeting with several people, and it always bothered me that I’d get all sweaty,” said the Dallas insurance salesman.
So every few months, he gets Botox injections in his armpits.
“It definitely helps. I don’t sweat so much,” he said “This just gives me a bit more confidence, I know I’m not going to get sweaty, my shirt won’t look wet.”
It’s a growing trend in Dallas.
People expect to sweat when they’re working out, but they don’t want to sweat in a professional environment. When they’re giving a presentation or have a big meeting at work.
Many male clients don’t call it Botox…they call it Brotox.
Botox is a toxin, and it must be kept cool. It works by blocking the nerve transmitters that cause sweating. A treatment is effective for up to six months.
Botox in the underarm area isn’t a new thing. Doctors have been using this as a tool against excessive sweating for a long time, actually,” said The Dallas Morning News medical expert Dr. Seema Yasmin.
“For some people it can cause swelling, redness, severe itching in the underarm area. And also because Botox paralyzes muscles, it can weaken the muscles in the underarm area,” she said.
Lawson says it’s worth every penny. And after two dozen tiny needle-pricks, he’s as confident closing new clients as he is riding around town.

Ladies, you may be surprised to know what men talk about on “guy’s night out,” besides women and sports — “Brotox,” also commonly known to the rest of us as Botox (botulinum toxin A). The long-time cosmetic enhancement procedure, often linked to women, has now reached a wide group of men who desire to appear more youthful. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of men undergoing Brotox has gone up 10 percent from last year, but why? Amid fear of competition with younger folk in the workplace and in their personal lives.
“Any man’s afraid he’s gonna get bumped by somebody younger in business or personal life too. I think once he gets over the stigma of it being something feminine, I could see more men being drawn to it,” said an unidentified man to CBS Atlanta. Male patients express concern about their “employment and how it affects them in their job with their co-workers and with clients and people they meet.”
A multitude of men are currently making more appointments to “freeze” time and hold onto their eternal youth through this age defying treatment, but does the “freezing” effect work? Botox injections contain the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that can block signals from the nerves to the muscles so the muscle can no longer contract, preventing the onset of wrinkles when injected, says the Mayo Clinic. The treatment is used on forehead lines, crow’s feet, or lines around the eye, and frown lines.
The Botox procedure takes about a few minutes, with no anesthesia required. Patients will start to see results anywhere from three to seven days when the procedure begins to take effect. It is advised to avoid alcohol at least one week before treatment, and to stop aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before treatment in order to reduce bruising associated with Botox.

Men have begun to adopt a more open attitude toward cosmetic procedures and have become more aware of the treatments available to them, as the age range of men being treated has widened. The BRO culture has fostered recent trends like the Hipster beard transplant, and now Brotox. The desire to climb the career ladder and keep up with the “younger-looking” has become the crucial reason why men opt for Botox — it’s surgery-free. Now, both men and women, vie to be the youngest and most desired of them all.

Denevervating agents (onabotulinumtoxina), available as Botox and Xeomin work by temporarily reducing muscle activity to inhibit wrinkle formation, specifically between-brow lines that resemble the number 11. By decreasing forehead furrowing, they eliminate wrinkles and fine lines that currently exist and also prevent new ones from forming, making them favorites of patients of all ages.
In addition to cosmetic applications, many of which are considered off-label (see below), Botox is also FDA-approved for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Xeomin is approved to treat abnormal spasms of the eyelids (blepharospasm) in adults who have had prior treatment with Botox. Xeomin is considered a more purified version of botulinum toxin type A than Botox because it does not have any protein additives. Some say this may help lower the risk of allergy to the product, as they believe the allergy risk is associated with these proteins. Xeomin is also the first denervating agent that does not need to be refrigerated before use.
Denervating agents have played a major part in the age of injectables, and doctors continue to find new and novel uses for them, as well as innovative ways to use them in conjunction with fillers.
Uses:

  • Eliminating wrinkles and lines caused by movement
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • Creating wider-looking eyes *
  • Fixing scars *
  • Reducing pore size *
  • Lifting the top of the nose *
  • Lessening a gummy smile *
  • Treating migraines and TMJ *
  • Eliminating neck bands and cleavage wrinkles *
  • Temporarily improving the appearance of frown lines and crow’s-feet
  • Treating chronic migraines, defined as 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting 4 or more hours
(*indicates an off-label use)
Treatments and ResultsJust like injectable fillers, a topical anesthetic may be applied to make treatment more comfortable. Then, over roughly 10 minutes (depending on how many areas are being treated), your doctor will strategically place several injections.
Although the overall experience is the same as with Botox and Xeomin, the main difference is that Dysport kicks in quicker—the results can usually be seen in a day or two, whereas Botox and Xeomin typically take three to five days. The results of both are believed to last about the same amount of time: on average, three months. However, after a series of injections, Dysport may last up to six months.
Side Effects and RisksYou may be red or bruised at the injection site for up to a few days, and in rare instances, patients have reported mild flu-like symptoms after treatment.
