What is JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC injectable gel?

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC injectable gel is the first and only filler FDA-approved to instantly add volume to the cheek area.Juvederm Voluma is the Juvederm specialty product for volumizing. It is designed for injection in the deep dermis to treat age-related facial volume loss. Voluma has the optimal thickness of a volumizer while still retaining the smooth nature of the Juvederm family.

Shopping malls and airports aren’t the only places that see more action around the holidays. This is also the time of year that merry-makers crowd the offices of plastic surgeons everywhere. Whether it’s because people can take extra time off for recovery, or because they want to be in top form for parties, plastic surgeons struggle to keep up with demand in November and December. However, there’s a few things you should keep in mind before booking your pre-holiday procedure.  At the office of Dr. Mark Bishara- we want you to take time to think about any procedure, whether it is during the holiday season or any other time of year.

Holiday parties and family gatherings, while fun, can be pretty stressful. You often see people you haven’t seen in a long time or those you’d like to impress. You splurge on new clothes, get your hair done and dissect your appearance in the mirror, your eye immediately drawn to what you don’t like. We’ve all been there. This added pressure leads many to take a proactive approach and seek cosmetic surgery.
It’s common for those considering cosmetic procedures to be motivated by the opinions of others. Though this is an understandable desire, we encourage patients to think about their own perceptions of themselves above all else. Showing up your snobby cousin over Christmas dinner or attracting a cute colleague at the holiday work party might not be the right reason to undergo major surgery. However, patients should be realistic about recovery times when considering having a procedure done during such a busy period. Though many surgeries only require a few days of rest, it’s important to err on the side of caution when it comes to recuperating in time for important events.
Though you can recover from a breast augmentation or liposuction over a long weekend, it’s normal for patients to experience some soreness for a few weeks after these procedures. On the other hand, recovering from more invasive procedures, like tummy tucks, can take up to a month.
What may normally seem like effortless tasks could become challenging or even painful when you’re recovering from surgery. Patients may be determined to have a procedure done in time for holiday fun, but they should be realistic about how the surgery will impact their everyday lives for a little while. Juvederm Voluma is the newest hyaluronic acid soft tissue filler to the Juvéderm family. As the name suggests, it is used to replace volume to the tissues of the face. Replacing the volume that has been lost through aging can help to restore a more youthful appearance.
Many times, we focus on superficial wrinkles and skin texture. While important, these issues are only part of the effects of aging. Bringing back the contours of the cheeks and chin that start to flatten as we age can do wonders for the overall appearance of the face. 1. What is Juvederm Voluma? Juvederm Voluma is the Juvederm specialty product for volumizing. It is designed for injection in the deep dermis to treat age-related facial volume loss.
2. How is Juvederm Voluma different from the rest of the family? it is a thick, robust product ideal for injection in the deep dermis to treat age-related facial loss. This product produces an extremely optimal lift that is still smooth and cohesive.
3. Where is Juvederm Voluma intended to be used? Juvederm Voluma is indicated for volumizing of the cheeks, cheekbones, and chin.

(One thing to note is that patients with sagging skin are not good candidates for Voluma-these patients may be better served by surgery.)

FDA Approves New Juvéderm Voluma XC For Adult Midface Volume Loss

New from JUVÉDERM® – JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™
The Food and Drug Administration has approved the cosmetic filler Juvéderm Voluma XC (hyaluronic acid/HA, Allergan).
The HA filler is the first and only filler to be approved for the temporary correction of age-related volume loss in adult patients ages 21 and older, according to a news release. The product is expected very soon, Allergan states.
Juvéderm Voluma XC, uses Allergan’s Vycross technology that results in a smooth gel. It also contains lidocaine to help numb the area during an injection procedure, the company states.
The new Juvederm Voluma XC has a long life, it has reversibility, and it is a product that really is geared to robustly treat the cheek in an efficient way.
The filler is designed to lift. What makes it different is that it uses a lower molecular weight hyaluronic acid that allows for increased cross-linking that gives the product an ideal lift capacity for the midface.
The approval follows the results of a single blinded controlled clinical trial conducted at 15 U.S. and two Canadian sites, which demonstrated efficacy and safety.
Results demonstrated that almost 50 percent of patients were maintaining optimal correction at two years. Similarly, patients demonstrated clinically significant results after almost three years.
Patients received touch-up treatment after 30 days as necessary and were followed up at one month, three months and then quarterly for up to two years, according to the study. Response was determined by two blinded investigators’ assessments at six months based on whether the patient had improved by one point or more on a validated six-month Mid-Face Volume Deficit Scale (MFVDS).
Dermatologists and plastic surgeons are going to be most concerned about patient satisfaction. 90 percent of patients reported feeling that they appeared, on average, five years younger at six months based on analysis of patient diaries. As far out as two years, patient satisfaction was at 76 percent.
The most common adverse effects seen during the clinical trial were injection site tenderness, bruising, redness, discoloration, swelling, lumps/bumps, firmness, itching, and pain that lasted approximately two to four weeks.
