Surgical Treatments
While nonsurgical treatment is preferred because of its minimally invasive nature and no need for anesthesia or downtime, patients with severe hair loss, or those that do not respond to more conservative treatments, may require surgery to restore hair loss and promote new hair growth. These procedures are designed to produce effective results with minimal downtime and no damage to surrounding hair follicles. Dr. Bishara is highly experienced in performing all of these procedures and will help you determine which one is right for you in order to achieve the best possible results.
Eyebrow Restoration
Eyebrow Restoration is a surgical procedure that requires precise attention to detail in order to restore a natural-looking eyebrow in patients who have lost part or all of their eyebrows. Although small and seemingly unimportant, the eyebrows play a crucial role in the appearance of the face, and losing one or both eyebrows can significantly alter this appearance, causing self-esteem problems within patients.
Eyebrow restoration uses single-hair micro-grafts that are inserted into this small space with the use of a needle at a designated angle. This allows for a natural appearance that can be customized to fit each patient’s individual goals for the shape, length and overall appearance of their new eyebrows. Some patients may require two or more treatment sessions in order to achieve their desired results. These sessions may be scheduled up to eight months apart in order to determine the results of the initial treatment before beginning a second treatment.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a minimally invasive hair restoration procedure that moves the patient’s own hair graft by graft to maximize the likelihood of regrowth after it has been transplanted in the balding area. This procedure involves moving the entire follicle, including the bulb, dermal papillae, capsule and outer root sheath, with special micro-instruments in order to prevent damage and maintain the health of the hair for optimum results.
FUE offers many benefits over traditional hair transplant procedures, including:
- Minimal scarring – Scarring after the FUE procedure is so minimal that many patients are able to cut their hair very short afterwards with no visible signs of treatment in the donor area.
- Quick return to work – There is virtually no downtime associated with this procedure. Patients can return to work and other activities as soon as they feel comfortable, which is often the same day as their procedure.
- Minimal Discomfort – For most patients, there is little to no pain associated with this procedure. As soon as the very next day, patients feel just the same as they did before their procedure.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
FUT performed by Dr. Bishara is a method of hair restoration surgery in which hair is transplanted only as natural, individual follicular units. This ensures that patients will achieve the most natural results and also allows Dr. Bishara to transplant the maximum amount of hair into a small area. These follicular units consist of up to four individual hairs in each follicle.
During the FUT procedure, the hair is trimmed short and then the scalp is numbed with a local anesthetic before being removed through a vibration distraction technique. The removed follicles are then stripped to their most natural state and then placed in the recipient area. Sutures are placed in the donor area, which are usually hidden by the patient’s hair. The healing process begins immediately after the procedure, and patients are usually able to resume normal hair care after a week. Hair growth typically begins about three months after the FUT procedure.
Temporal Peaks Restoration
Temporal Peaks Restoration restores a natural and youthful hairline by recreating the temporal peaks, the areas at the front of the head that are common sites of hair loss. Many people become especially self-conscious about hair loss in this area because of its prominent location. The temporal peaks help frame the face and define a person’s appearance.
Restoration of hair in this area includes transplantation with proper placement to recreate a natural hairline and restore the patient’s original appearance.
